Nurture: Elevating Lives, Inspiring Sustainable Change

Why It Matters

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly vulnerable tribal groups (PVTGs) – marginalized tribal and migrant communities in rural Karnataka lived on the edges of society—lacking access to education, healthcare, sanitation, and dignified livelihoods. Post-pandemic, these vulnerabilities deepened.

Groups like the Hakki Pikki and Iruliga tribes in Bannerghatta and migrant marginalized families in Heelalige face:

  • Generational disconnect/exclusion from formal education and primary healthcare systems
  • Unsafe, unsanitary living environments
  • Economic instability and social invisibility
  • Children struggling with learning gaps and emotional trauma

These are not just service gaps—they are systemic barriers to dignity, opportunity, and hope.

How We Drive Change

Nurture is OBLF’s flagship community rehabilitation program, rooted in the belief that lasting change comes from sustained, integrated, people-centered interventions. Through education, healthcare, sanitation, life skills, and community empowerment, Nurture restores dignity and unlocks possibilities for some of the most vulnerable communities.

In Bannerghatta’s Tribal Communities (Iruliga & Hakki Pikki):

  • Sports-Based Life Skills Program (using Ultimate Frisbee) to identify leadership within the community; team building activities that promote communication, empathy, leadership, and tackle gender imbalance among adolescents.
  • After-School Remedial Education to bridge learning gaps for tribal children
  • Community Library & Learning Centre run by and for the community
  • Periodic Health Clinics offering preventive care, mental health services, geriatric care
  • Tertiary Care Follow-Up for Children with Disabilities: We support children with developmental and physical disabilities by facilitating continued follow-up at tertiary care centers, ensuring access to specialized services beyond primary care.
  • Free Medication Support: We provide essential, free medications for underprivileged patients with chronic cardiac and psychiatric conditions, helping them maintain treatment continuity and improve long-term health outcomes.
  • Community Campaigns – Adult Literacy and Health Awareness – for holistic family impact. (Upcoming)

In Heelalige’s migrant marginalized community Settlement (~500 individuals):

  • Bridge Learning for children to reduce the gap to grade and mainstream school
  • SEL Programs to strengthen emotional well-being
  • Structured Sports Programs (football and frisbee) that promote discipline, teamwork, and gender sensitivity
  • Healthcare Access – Periodic primary healthcare clinics
  • Sanitation Support – Building clean toilet infrastructure
  • Vocational Training & Career Exposure for youth and adults to move beyond informal labor
